Chairperson of Jury
Guigla Katsarava
Specially Appointed Professor, Tokyo College of Music
"Там где заканчиваются слова начинается музыка..."
“Where the words end the music begins...”
In my opinion this quote expresses the essence of Rachmaninov's creativity.
Rachmaninov stands apart in the evolution of world music of the 20th century, it remains unique individual and unique, having no analogues in the world art. His unique language bears no analogues in the world art. Rachmaninov's music touches, excites,
inspires and wings people regardless of cultural and national differences, as it is deeply human, it is characterized by emotional “openness”, sincerity and spontaneity of expression, the finest lyrics, along with the knightly severity and Titanic power. Rachmaninov's creativity, which grew up from late Romanticism, constantly developed as it underwent a set of evolutions.
His style absorbed various tendencies, sometimes even contradictory, but his music is always easily recognized as it doesn't belong to any current. Rachmaninov's work dates back to the period of Russian art, which is called the “silver age”. The main creative method of art of this period was symbolism. Rachmaninov's works are saturated with symbols expressed by motifs-symbols, the main of which is the medieval motif “Dies Irae”. This motif symbolizes Rachmaninov's premonition of catastrophe,“the end of the world”. Also, in the works of Rachmaninov motifs derived from Orthodox practice can be found, such as mighty bell sounds.
The significance of Rachmaninov's performing work is enormous. Rachmaninov as a pianist became a benchmark for many generations of pianists from different countries and schools. Among the most celebrated features of Rachmaninov’s playing are the deep expressive content of his performances, the“singing on the piano”quality of his lines, the highly elaborated virtuoso pianism and a very bright personality. In my opinion, the Rachmaninoff Competition in Japan will seek to reveal a bright creative personality, pianists not only equipped with great technical abilities, but also having a great individual self. I would like to thank the Rachmaninov Association and the Rachmaninov Competition in Japan for the honorable invitation.
In conclusion, I would like to quote Sergei Rachmaninov
Музыка прежде всего должна быть любима; должна идти от сердца и быть обращена к сердцу. Иначе музыку надо лишить надежды быть вечным и нетленным искусством.
“First of all, music should be loved, it should go from the heart and be turned to the heart. Otherwise, music should be deprived of hope to be eternal and imperishable art.”
